FRIENDSHIP QUILTS BY LOCAL QUILTERS

Friendship Quilts

Quilters are often members of a Friendship Group.  Friendship groups meet socially, share ideas, discuss new techniques, recommend books or classes, and share finished quilts or works in progress. They will sometimes choose a project that becomes a Friendship Quilt which some or all members will choose to complete.

Specific directions are given to the participants for the project design. Each participant makes the number of blocks that are needed to complete the quilt.  The blocks are then divided up based on the number of participants and then exchanged with members of the group. For example, if there are 100 blocks in a quilt and 10 participants, each person will make 100 blocks and then divide those blocks into stacks of 10 to give to each of the participants in the exchange.  Each participant will then end up with 100 blocks-10 that he/she made and 90 from the other 9 quilters. Each individual will then arrange the blocks received in their own creative way. An exchange will maximize the variety of fabrics which will give each quilt its special flavor and look. The final quilts will be each participant’s unique and beautiful creation!

The following 3 pairs of quilts were Friendship Quilts. In the first, Starry, Starry Night, (designed by Cherie A. Flynn of Wellington, New Zealand and featured in Quilters’ Newsletter Magazine issue 354,) two simple 3 1/2 inch blocks (about 475 blocks total) are combined. The arrangement of the blocks create dark, four point stars, and light, eight point stars. A dark border frames the design. It’s a scrappy quilt (blocks are made using leftover scraps from other quilts) and is perfect for an exchange in a quilting friendship group.

The second pair, Garden Party Ladies was adapted by Claudia Redfern and Ellie Rapp from a design by Freddie Moran.

The third pair, Oriental Lanterns, was adapted from a quilt design by Toby Lischko. With this pair you can see how 2 quilters using the same pattern and pieces can have creations that are totally different!
