“Happy Birds” pattern by Jen Kingwell SIZE: 72×72 Hand applique. Machine pieced .Hand and machine quilted.
Bud and I took the 61 days Round the Pacific cruise in 2018. There were many sea days on the trip, so I decided to make “Happy Birds” by Jen Kingwell. I did most of the center appliqué by hand before sailing, collected a wide variety of prints, gathered tools, and arranged with Princess Cruises to take my Singer Featherweight machine. The small hexagons were glued to Sharon Schamber’s appliqué sheets. Bud wanted to be a part of this, so he cut out the hexagons and glue sticked them to fabrics. The center and the hexagons were hand appliqué, all the other outer blocks are machine pieced. The outer borders were sewn together and the quilting was done at home. The sixteen flower blocks were hand appliquéd using the pattern “Garden of Stitches” by Lisa Bongean by members of the National Quilt Day Friendship Group of Laguna Beach. Anita Adriano, Juanita Swarts, Pat Carriker, Ellie Rapp, Carolyn Winfield, Sandy Jacobs, Eike Anderson, Jo Hutcheson, Carol Nilsen, Marge Greenwald, Margaret Arnold, Claudia Redfern, Dionne Thomas, Beverly Packard, and myself. I set the blocks in vertical rows and added a variety of baskets, houses and Flying Geese blocks. The colors were inspired by the work of Freddy Moran. Nancy Ota. Email: [email protected]m
Infinity #2 SIZE: 57” x 40” Machine Pieced. Machine Quilted. Andrea Perejda taught a workshop for a pieced circle that used a wedge ruler. I found that you could reverse the wedge and have this appearance of infinity. The background sections are both new and vintage Japanese fabrics.
